Mahiriki Tangaora comments:

This appears to be the legend of Tangiia and Karika about to engage in battle at sea. The story has it that rather than battling it out for the land of Rarotonga, they then decided to sail the perimeter of the island and where they meet up, divide it accordingly.

The book by Sir Tom Davis titled "Vaka" recalls the ancient Polynesian links that Rarotonga had with Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Tahiti and the Marquesas.

The story of Tangi'ia and Karika is told in one of the chapters.
