Rongo was born twin with Tangaroa and since he was born first, he was considered more important.
Rongo was also the elder brother to Tongaiti (lizard god), to Tangiia and to Tanepapakai.

In the manuscript Stephen Savage published in 1962, "A Dictionary of the Maori Language of Rarotonga", Tangaroa is cited as being one of the great deities of the Polynesian race and one of the principal gods of Rarotonga and adjacent islands.
Tangaroa is Polynesian sea-god, one of the children of the Sky Father, Ranginui and the Earth-Goddess, Papatuanuku, who had so much water in her body that it swelled and burst, becoming the ocean.
Tangaroa is the Maori guardian of the ocean, known traditionally for his protection and power and over the oceans and seas.
In addition to the links at the sides of this text there are other Tangaroa carvings and currency images throughout the site.
